The event that took place in 1906 measured equivalent to M7.9 and ruptured 296 miles along the San Andreas fault. The shaking lasted from 45-60 seconds and some places such as Shelter Cove near the north end of the rupture experienced up to 28 feet (8.5m) of offset.
