Canal Mill was built beside the Leeds - Liverpool Canal on Halliwell Lane in 1855 for Richard Smethhurst. On his death in 1860 the mill was passed to business associates William and Charles Widows. Eventually, with the decline in the cotton industry the mill closed in the late 1950s. Over the years Canal Mill had various uses until it was bought by local businessman Tim Knowles in 1994. Tim opened the mill as a shopping centre. It's prominent position by the side of the M61 Motorway and close proximity to the A6 make access easy from all areas. External additions have been added. There is a Garden Centre at the front of the mill, and Puddletown Pirates themed childrens' play area to the side. Out of the many textile mills which were in Chorley, Canal Mill is one of only a handful still remaining. The shopping centre is housed in the former Canal Mill.
