During recent exercises off Tripoli, Tripolitania (now Libya), the Sixth Task Fleet discovered a yacht off course with no apparent life onboard. Fleet Commander John J. Ballentine ordered the destroyer USS George K. Mackenzie (DD 836) to proceed to the boat and investigate. After a thorough search and inquiries, it was discovered to be the Imperia of Southampton, belonging to a Greek citizen. It was lost by the owner while being towed to Malta from Tripoli. Admiral Ballentine directed that Mackenzie deliver the yacht to the American Counsel General in Tripoli for settlement. Photograph released March 10, 1950.
