A plane in company radioed a patrolling destroyer for help. Two and hone half hours later, the badly burned pilot was picked-up from his one-man raft by the destroyer. During the rescue operation, the destroyer was under threat of an attack by enemy plane, but the plane was driven off by planes of Task Force 77. He was given emergency medical treatment and the next day was transferred back to his carrier. In this photograph, Boiler Technician William A. Vogel tows the one-man raft toward the destroyer side.
