Note, On 1 September 1925, Commander John Rodgers and a crew of four in a PN-9 ran out of fuel on the first San Francisco to Hawaii flight. Landing at sea, they rigged a sail and set sail for Hawaii. On 10 September, they were rescued by submarine, R-4, 10 miles from Kaui, then Territory of Hawaii. While later serving as Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, he died in an airplane crash on August 27, 1926, when his plane suddenly nose-dived into the Delaware River.
