On 10 September, they were rescued by submarine, R-4, 10 miles from Kaui, then Territory of Hawaii. While later serving as Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, he died in an airplane crash on August 27, 1926, when his plane suddenly nose-dived into the Delaware River.
