But you don't need numbers to know Amsterdam is struggling. A visit downtown makes that abundantly clear. At midday on Monday, in nearly perfect June weather, Main Street was as empty as the Arctic. There are 54 registered sex offenders in Amsterdam, NY not including the Greater Amsterdam New York Area. Amsterdam, NY has a ratio of 29.21 offenders per 10,000 residents. This is higher than the national average of 14.07 offenders per 10,000 residents. A Superfund site is any land in the United States that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an imminent risk to human health and/or the environment. There are 58 such sites in the Greater Amsterdam New York area and 8 within the City of Amsterdam New York limits. There are many other hazardous waste sites that fall just underneath the hazardous waste (EPA) guidelines so the actual count of toxic sites is much higher.
