Today’s dive will start ~600m to explore for deep-sea coral communities (especially precious corals), and transit upslope to also survey bottomfish fishery habitat (starting at ~400m) up to ~250m. oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeanos/welcome.html While making observations at a depth of about 330 meters, one of the scientists excitely broke in and identified this as a type of Jellynose eel (genus guentherus, species katoi) which was first described as a new species in 2008, and said that this is only the second observation of a live specimen. This one looked to be about 40cm long.
