After attending Mills College (B.S., 1913) and Columbia University (M.A., 1914), she taught home economics at University of Missouri and University of Minnesota and then in 1918 began graduate study at University of Wisconsin, where she earned Ph.D. in physiology in 1923. At Wisconsin, she met and married physiologist George Holman Bishop (1889-1973).
