I'm not entirely sure how these formed, but they came out of a passing Extra 300. The Extra is a little stunt plane, capable of phenomenal G-stresses and with an unbelieveable roll rate. I suspect that the piston engine means that smoke comes out in discrete little puffs rather than a continuous stream, and this, combined with very, very powerful wingtip vortices, combined to make these weird little rings.
