It was on the French cruiser Hoche, which was captured in 1797 by a British squadron. The guns were bought in England by American John B. Murry and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean where he sold them to the U. S. Government. One gun, called Long Tom, was sent to the privateer General Armstrong to help augment the U. S.
