As of Wednesday morning, an estimated 360,000 gallons of untreated sewage has been flowing from a sewer line into a creek and then down into the Mohawk River. An overwhelmingly foul stench has permeated the air for days. It’s the second such leak in the past two weeks. On July 13, 500,000 gallons of waste leaked into the Mohawk River due to a piece of failed equipment at the Amsterdam water treatment plant. That's the site of the current leak as well, though it's not known at this time where the break occurred or when it started. The Latham and Cohoes water districts both draw drinking water from the Mohawk River. At this point, it’s not known when repairs might be made.
