The following is a description of the incident by John Bolton as transcribed by his wife Elaine in October 2014. ******************** It has on occasion been called “the great fire”. It started in a propane refrigerator in magistrate Jack Lloyd’s house on the east side of Highway 41. The house stood approximately where the current Cod Fathers restaurant is today. Houses and businesses on that side of the street were flattened in the inferno. It was stopped just south of Jim and Kate Vogan’s house [shown in the (2nd) picture]. There was this stiff westerly breeze that day to fan the flames [note the Pines near Vogan’s are leaning eastward]. Furniture saved from homes and businesses was piled across the highway (See 2nd picture) [note lubrication drama from the G.W. Wood garage]. As much as we can ascertain, the woman standing amid the furniture was a Doreen Wood [Hawes], daughter of Gordon and Mabel Wood. Photos are from Violet Thibeault and info was gained from conversation with Mary Lloyd Johnson and later, May Thompson.
