| Keywords: outdoor boat vehicle The water off of the eastern tip of Long Island Sound can be very rough, especially as the tide ebbs and the water races between the various islands back into the Atlantic Ocean. Flows of up to 5 miles per hour have been recorded. Built in 1879. The site was so difficult and dangerous that construction took 6 years, 5 of them to construct the foundation and base. The engineer was Francis Smith, who also built the foundation for the Statue of Liberty. The tower is octagonal near the lantern and square at it's base and is 45 feet tall, rising from one side of a one and one half story granite gothic revival style keeper's house. All of this sits on a granite caisson. The lantern is a DCB-24 aerobeacon and the light signal is a red flash every ten seconds. The lighthouse is thought to be haunted and has been investigated by the Atlantic Paranormal Society, which recorded multiple electromagnetic disturbances on the stairs, and the movement of furniture without cause. Located on a reef 3/4 of a mile west southwest of Race Point and the site of multiple deaths from shipwrecks, and also during construction.
