His hesitation to go there, for fear of being disappointed by the location, was quickly overcome by his desire to work. He very quickly got to grips with views of the Grand Canal, with Santa Maria della Salute on the opposite bank in the centre of the canvas. He was able to paint this subject from Palazzo Barbaro, his first residence while staying in Venice. The view to the east is captured from the level of the water; this allowed the painter to show the poles used for mooring gondolas towering out of the water in front of him.
