Governor Bryant cuts the cake and the speeches begin. Johnson's remarks include comments on the unity of the U.S., "omens of change in the climate between the East and West," a reference to the Cuban missile crisis ("a turning point in the entire Cold War"), winning the space race, doubling the nuclear warhead stockpile and a litany of recent military build-up, and the upswing in the economy. He then mentions social programs, the environment, tax rates, etc. Then he makes a plea to face the problems of human rights, the "inequality of our Negro citizens."
