These are the nuts of the common / European beech tree, clustered in great numbers over the branches. It was impossible to estimate how many prospective little beech tree this one was carrying - thousands, certainly. Beech wood is short-grained, making it brittle, but it is very durable when wet. Hence its use in ship building, when oak was in short supply. Beech has some antiseptic properties. Deciduous tree to 25m, with smooth silvery-gray bark striped with brown; trunk fluted. Leaves oval, pointed, somewhat pleated, sharply toothed, hairy on veins beneath. Catkins greenish to 5cm, with the leaves. Fruit in pendant clusters, surrounded by 3-lobed bracts; nuts small.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nHabitat: Woods, hedgerows and scrub, occasionally pollarded, mostly in low altitudes.\nDistribution: S. Britain and Europe, north to S Sweden.\n\nThis Picture is made during a Long Weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2019.
