This image shows the effects of Coral bleaching and disease. This stunning Staghorn coral (Acropora) is beginning to show the signs of coral bleaching. The tips are turning white. This could be as a result of pollution, disease or global warming. The location is Phi Phi Islands, Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand.

Next to Tayandu Island there are Karangs, shallow areas that reach a few meters below the surface. They are full of life. This one is a long shallow reef reaching 5 to 8 meters at the shallowest. The coral community was dominated by large table Acropora with huge Porites colonies scattered about, and large patches of Isopora. This large Acropora coral is a good shelter for many fish species like Blue-Green Chromis Chromis viridis, Reticulated Dascyllus Dascyllus reticulatus, Webers Chromis Chromis weberi, Threadfin Anthias Pseudanthias huchti, Ternate Chromis Chromis ternatensis, Scaly Chromis Chromis lepidolepis, Leopard Wrasse Macropharyngodon meleagris and more. Nusa Laut is the smallest inhabited island in the Lease Islands group east of Ambon, in Indonesia's Maluku province. Overall the coral community of Amet Reef is healthy and has a high resilience potential. Acropora table corals grow to enormous dimensions here. Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel their symbiotic algae, known as zooxanthellae, due to stress caused by factors such as high water temperatures, pollution, or ocean acidification. This leads to the corals losing their vibrant colors and becoming pale or white. Without the zooxanthellae, the corals are more vulnerable to disease and may ultimately die. Coral bleaching is a major concern for coral reefs around the world, as it can have a devastating impact on the entire marine ecosystem that relies on these important structures.

Staghorn Coral Acropora sp. is appreciated as shelter by many fish spieces like these Ternate Chromis Chromis ternatensis forming a big school in mid morning. Even quite big species like Coral Hind Cephalopholis miniata find a way into this labyrinth -- try to find them! Feather stars, ascidians, hydrozoans, kneecap corals, soft corals, cactus algae -- there is a lot more to see. Next to Tayandu Island there are Karangs, shallow areas that reach a few meters below the surface. They are full of life. Table Acropora exceeded three metres in size here, reaching up to four metres.\nThis colony was badly damaged. Damage happens often by mix of storms, earthquakes and destructive fishing practices. \nThis colony has a good overgrowth of dead portions, a high lesion repair. The white edges are the growth zones.\nIn 2023, when this photo was taken, the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community were all high.\nKarang Huisman, Tayandu Island, Indonesia, \n5°28'41.72 S 132°13'21.31 E at 11m depth
