Coral reefs are the one of earths most complex ecosystems, containing over 800 species of corals and one million animal and plant species. Here we see a shallow coral reef consisting of hard Staghorn Coral (Acropora) supporting shoals of Indian Damselfish (Dascyllus cameus). They are using the reef as a natural protection from predators. This coral, although on the whole healthy, is showing signs of distress. 75% of the worlds coral reefs are now classed as 'Threatened,' with 60% of most reefs having local damage from anchors, overfishing, coral bleaching, disease and pollution. Here the tips of the coral are beginning to bleach.

$At this very healthy reef at Karang Rembang, a sea mountain north of Tayandu Island, this beautyful Acropora table coral dominates the scenery. \nAcropora corals are among the fastest growing corals on reefs, they are excellent reef-builders. However, their speed of growth is balanced by the fragility of some of the structures, as they are easily damaged in storms allowing other coral species a chance of growth. \nKarang Rembang, north of Tayandu Island, Indonesia, 5°27'4.812 S 132°23'54.732 E at 16m depth$

There are quite a lot of Philippines Chromis Chromis scotochiloptera and under the table coral there is a juvenile Chevroned Butterflyfish Chaetodon trifascialis. \nThere is a lot of Black Sun Coral Tubastraea micranthus in the background. \nTriton Bay, Westpapua, Indonesia 4°0'49.848 S 134°12'13.116 E at 8m depth$
