A suggestive view of Piazza del Campo, the medieval heart of Siena with its characteristic shell shape, from the main entrance of the Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall). Built starting in 1290, the Palazzo Pubblico was the seat of the Council of Nine and the executive power of the medieval city. Currently it is still the seat of the municipal government of the Tuscan city. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, in central Italy, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. Since 1995 the historic center of Siena has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition format.

It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and turned into a ruin by the Heruli in 267 AD. -
