I am fascinated by what appears to be a sterile dead environment until I look closer and see tiny mosses, lichens and algae actually growing a stabilizing soil on undistrubed sand. I learned about this fragile cryptobiotic soil from rangers in the United States National Parks.

$In the centre of the photo is a Dollar Bush (Zygophyllum stapffii). It is shown in the Namib Desert and is endemic to the area.\n\nThe photograph was taken in February 2018, on a popular excursion (either self-drive or in a group) from Swakopmund, Namibia. The trip is called Welwitschia Drive and goes into the Namib Naukluft National Park.$
