Tórshavn, Streymoy, Faroe Islands: City Hall of Torshavn - stone ashlar façade, Vaglið street. Tórshavnar municipality (Tórshavnar kommuna) is a self-governing territorial unit in the Faroe Islands, centered on the largest and also the capital city of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn . The commune occupies 12% of the islands' surface, but a full 40% of their population. It includes a large part of the island of Streymoy, as well as the islands of Koltur, Hestur, Nólsoy and Sandoy. The municipality was founded in 1866 , with which Tórshavn became the official capital of the Faroe Islands.

Tórshavn, Streymoy, Faroe Islands: red façade of the Skansapakkhúsid, the outermost building on Tinganes, erected in 1749 on the site of a small fort in the Tinganes peninsula, a rocky promontory separating the east and west harbors, historic location of the Faroese landsstýri (government). Viking colonists held their Ting (parliament) on the peninsula in 825 AD, the Ting is mentioned in Færeyingasaga. The home-rule government of the Faroe Islands still sits here (Føroya Landsstýri). Denmark is represented through a high commissioner.
