British silver, if sterling (92.5% silver), has a standard set of hallmarks aimed at guaranteeing the purity of the metal used in the hallmarked object. In this case, the four marks identify the town that gave the mark; the purity of the silver; the date letter, and the maker. In order, these are the crown for Sheffield; the lion passant for sterling silver; the letter 'e' for 1897, and the makers mark (JD over WD, in a shield) for James Deakin and Sons. The firm was established in 1865. The item carrying these marks is a silver table knife.

A close up photograph of a thaler, Switzerland, city of Basel, without date, circa 1690. The thaler was the currency of the Swiss canton of Basel until 1798. The currency was issued by both the Canton and Bishopric of Basel. The basic unit was the thaler, which was subdivided into 30 Batzen, each of 4 Kreuzer or 8 Rappen. It was replaced by the Frank of the Helvetian Republic in 1798. This was, in turn, replaced by the Basel Frank.

1 Thaler Austrian silver coin from the year 1780. Empress Maria Theresia of Habsburg. Imperial double-headed eagle with the coat of arms of Austria. Hungary, Bohemia, Burgundy and Burgau (Guenzburg).
This Austrian coin, the Maria Theresien Taler (MTT), was first minted in 1741, and from that time forward was widely adopted as silver bullion in world trade. It has a purity of 0.833, as against English sterling silver which has a purity of 0.925. Maria Theresa (Maria Theresia), for whom the coin is named, was Empress of Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780, and the silver thaler / taler coin is always dated 1780. This photo shows the obverse / front of the coin, the head of the Empress. The letters S.F. show that this example was struck after 1850. Thaler is the root word from which 'dollar' originated.
