Thermopolis, Hot Springs County, Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyoming: the Wind River, located in west-central Wyoming, United States, constitutes the upper segment of the Bighorn River system and spans approximately 185 miles in length with a drainage basin covering 7,730 square miles. It originates at Wind River Lake near Togwotee Pass in the Wind River Range at an elevation of 9,760 feet, flowing southeast through the Wind River Basin and the Wind River Indian Reservation—shared by the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes—before joining the Little Wind River near Riverton and turning north through the Owl Creek Mountains. Impounded by Boysen Dam to create Boysen Reservoir for irrigation and power, the river traverses the scenic Wind River Canyon and transitions to the Bighorn River at the \

Dubois, Fremont County, Wyoming: the Dubois Badlands Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is a 4,520-acre expanse of federally managed land administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in west-central Wyoming, located just north of U.S. Highway 26 near the town of Dubois. Dubois Badlands, comprise a rugged expanse of extensively eroded badlands carved into the Eocene Wind River Formation, part of the broader Wind River Basin flanked by the Wind River Range to the south and the Owl Creek Mountains to the north. This arid landscape features dramatic badlands topography - intricate drainage patterns, colorful layered sediments, eroded flat-topped benches, deeply carved drainages, steep slopes, and unique geological formations such as hoodoos, offering insights into the region's Laramide orogeny uplift and ancient fluvial environments from approximately 50 million years ago. The area provides opportunities for hiking on unmarked trails across state trust and public lands.

Crowheart, Wind River Indian Reservation, Fremont County, Wyoming: colorful formations, part of the Wind River Formation, located along U.S. Highway 26 between Crowheart and Dubois, within the Wind River Basin. These hills expose sedimentary layers deposited during the Eocene epoch, roughly 50 million years ago, consisting primarily of sandstone, siltstone, shale, and claystone. The vivid yellow, red, and purple hues of the geological strata result from varying iron oxidation states and mineral content within the sediments. This region illustrates classic basin-margin geology, where erosion of the adjacent Wind River Range exposed ancient fluvial and floodplain deposits, offering insight into Wyoming’s early Cenozoic landscape and climate.
