Popping up in the landscape like mushrooms in a forest, Enver HoxhaAAs bunkers are a continuous reminder of the communist dictatorAAs paranoid mind-set and his isolationist politics. The prototype of the bunker was developed in 1958 and it is told that the engineer who designed it actually had to stand inside the bunker while it was attacked by a tank to test its strength. The engineer survived and the bunkers were made into mass production. More than 600.000 concrete bunkers were built and placed in even the most remote places as the photo report shows. They served not only as a possible defence for enemy attacks but also as a constant reminder of the countries dictatorship. This inadvertently added to a feeling of insecurity among the Albanian people.
