Malawi, the landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is a country of highlands split by the Great Rift Valley and the huge Lake Malawi, whose southern end is within Lake Malawi National Park and several other parks are now habitat for diverse wildlife from colorful fish to the Big Five. On Kaikoura's coastline the Pied Cormorant. This large black-and-white shag is often seen individually or in small groups roosting on rocky headlands, trees or artificial structures.
Steppe eagles arrive at their summer breeding grounds around April, at the start of spring. Large nests, up to a metre wide, are constructed from twigs and lined with various materials, such as old rags and camel dung. While the nests are usually placed on the ground in a position allowing a good view of the surroundings, as a result of habitat alteration and persecution, nests are increasingly being found in trees, bushes and on artificial structures. The female lays a clutch of between one and three eggs which are incubated for 45 days, with the chicks being brooded for a further 55 to 65 days before fledging. The steppe eagle is remarkably long lived, reaching up to 41 years in captivity.
The Collared Crow is also known as the Ring-Necked Crow or White-Collared Crow. It is a member of the Corvidae family native to China and Northern Vietnam. While it tends to avoid large towns and cities, it is commonly sighted in rural areas. Its diet includes a wide variety of items, such as insects, mollusks, grains (especially rice), and refuse left by humans. The collared crow nests in trees, constructing mud-plastered nests, and typically lays 3–4 eggs.
