Galls on white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) in late summer. They look like a natural part of this wildflower, such as fruits, but inside a tiny insect called a stem gall midge is developing. This midge, Schizomyia eupatoriflorae, specializes in parasitizing this plant, which is poisonous.\n\nAccording to Wikipedia, Abe Lincoln's mom may have died from milk sickness passed on by cattle that ate white snakeroot, which is native to eastern and central North America.
