Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), a large, bluish-grey species of pigeon with elegant blue bow-like plumes, a brown breast, and a red iris. It is part of a genus of three very large pigeons native to the New Guinea region. The bird can be easily recognized by the unique white spikes on its crests and the sounds it makes. Its name is a tribute to Queen Victoria.

A Greater Ani (Crotophaga major) in Panama.  The three species of anis are New World cuckoos in the family Cuculidae.  This bird is a partial brood parasite, in that it builds its own nest, but about 15% of the time lays its egg in another species’ nest, most often caciques and oropendolas.  It has a very wide range, from Panama throughout much of South America.
