East Honolulu coast, Oahu, Hawaii\n\nSida fallax, known as yellow 'ilima,[1] or in Hawaiian, ʻilima, is a species of herbaceous flowering plant in the Hibiscus family, Malvaceae, that occurs on some Pacific Islands. Plants may be erect or prostrate and are found in drier areas in sandy soils, often near the ocean. ʻIlima is the symbol of Laloimehani and is the flower for the island of Oʻahu.\n\nIt is known as Kio in Marshallese.[2]\n\nNative Hawaiians used ʻilima flowers to make lei.[5] It used to be seen as a lei for royalty, but can now be worn by anyone. The flowers are sometimes also used as a food garnish.[6] It was also used medicinally.[5] S. fallax is sometimes used as a groundcover in tropical areas.

Medium to tall stout hairless perennial forming large clumps; stem thick. Leaves fleshy, undulate and pinnately lobed, waxy. Flowers white, 10-15mm, in broad billowy panicles. fruit 8-14mm, 2-parted, the upper segment globose.\nHabitat: Costal places, shingle and sandy beaches, sea cliffs.\nFlowering Season: June-August.\nDistribution: Atlantic and Baltic Coast of Europe, including Britain and Ireland.\n\nOften growing where there is a rich accumulation of seaweed humus. The young shoots used to be blanched and eaten as a vegetable.\n\nThis Picture is made on the IJsselmeer Coast, Noordoostpolder (The Netherlands).\nThe Species is not common along our Coasts.
