A glimpse of the suggestive crypt in the basement of the church of Sant'Andrea (Saint Andrew), in the heart of the medieval city of Viterbo, in central Italy. The church was built in 1187 and dedicated to the fisher Apostle. The crypt is in Gothic style, consisting of a small apse and a simple stone altar with a tabernacle (center), surrounded by four naves and mighty peperino columns. The narrow Gothic windows with stained glass create a particular pictorial effect inside the crypt. The medieval center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean. Located about 100 kilometers north of Rome, in the Lazio region, Viterbo is also known as the City of Popes because in the 13th century it was the seat of papal power for 24 years. Founded in the Etruscan era and recognized as a city in the year 852, Viterbo is characterized by its stone and tuff constructions, materials abundantly present in this region of central Italy.
