The Hairy Woodpecker (Dendrocopos villosus), formerly Leuconotopicus villosus, is a medium-sized woodpecker. It is often mistaken for the Downy Woodpecker which is smaller. The hairy woodpecker inhabits mature deciduous forests throughout Central and North America. Adults are black on the upper parts with a white or pale back. The wings have white spots and adult males have a red patch on the head. These birds are mostly permanent residents in their range. In the extreme north they may migrate further south. In the mountains, they may move to a lower elevation. The hairy woodpecker forages on trees, turning over bark to uncover insects. They also eat fruits, berries, nuts and tree sap. They are also known to cache food in tree crevices to be found and eaten later. Mating pairs of woodpeckers will excavate a cavity in a tree, where they will lay their eggs. This male hairy woodpecker was photographed while pecking on a tree during a snowstorm at Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
