Slingjaw Wrasse Epibulus insidiator occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Red Sea to South Africa and the Hawaiian and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs in a depth range from 1-42m, max. length 54cm. \nThe mouth of this species is protrusible and unfolds into a tube easily half the body length. The jaws swing forward into a long tube to catch prey with strong suction. When not in use, the entire apparatus is conveniently folded under the head. \nColor varies with age and sex, but adult color varies additionally, including with an all-yellow form. Sub adults and females are brown or, not uncommonly, uniformly yellow. Terminal males, like this specimen, are dark with a white head and a dark streak extending horizontally through the eye. Males become ornamented with orange and yellow over the back.\nRun Island, Banda Sea, Indonesia \n4°32'56.5548 S 129°40'10.29 E at 10m depth

Adults of Humphead or Napoleon Wrasse Cheilinus undulatus develop thick lips and a prominent bulbous hump on the forehead and can grow up to more than 2.2 meters. The species inhabits steep outer reef slopes, channel slopes and lagoon reefs. Primary food are mollusks, fishes, sea urchins, crustaceans and other invertebrates. Napoleon Wrasse is one of the few predators of toxic animals such as sea hares, boxfishes and crown-of-thorns starfish. Napoleon Wrasse is is seriously endangered, being hunted to the brink of extinction to feed a growing demand among wealthy Chinese diners for luxury live fish. Not wise, so crown-of-thorns starfishes take over and destroy the reefs.

Redbreasted Wrasse Cheilinus fasciatus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa and islands of the western Indian Ocean to Micronesia and Samoa and Tonga, north to the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and south to Queensland, Australia in a depth range from 4-60m, but usually not deeper than 40m, max. length 40cm. This specimen was encountered at the Iro Wreck, a 143 meter oil tanker wreck since March 1944, WWII, was ordered by the Japanese Navy during the 1920´s building programs. Although heavily overgrown with black coral and sponges, the torpedo hole is still clearly visible. The wreck sits upright between 15m and 36m of water.
