Great Rift Valley, Kenya – August 27, 2017: A coffee break in the Lake Magadi escarpment during the aerial photography project. The Great Rift Valley is part of an intra-continental ridge system that runs through Kenya from north to south. The valley contains a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active, and many lakes such as the Turkana, Baringo, Bogoria, Nakuru, Magadi and Natron. Most the lakes are shallow, poorly drained and alkaline, thus very rich in blue-green algae, which feed insects, small crustaceans and massive flocks of lesser flamingos (Phoenicoparrus minor). Altogether it forms a very peculiar mineral and colour-rich landscape. Currently the area is inhabited by the cattle-herder Maasai tribes. The relics of many hominids have been found in the escarpments.
