Between 1100AD and 1200AD native people inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Their way of life was the key to survival in this harsh landscape. These people survived here, farming one of the warmest and driest places on the Colorado Plateau. They developed the skills to farm the land and endure hardship in an area where many would not. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. This Pueblo dwelling is on East Mesa in Wupatki National Monument. The monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage, is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Stacked volcanic rock forms an exterior cliff dwelling wall, in which this single entrance opening was created. The wall contains small portals on either side of the entry where rocks were omitted so that arrows could be fired through them, permitting concealment from attempts by enemies to breach the dwelling. Visibility into the high desert in front of the entry is good for hundreds of yards. On the opposite side of the site a sheer cliff drops to a long steep hill that descends to a dry riverbed - allowing no access from that side. The Sinagua Indian tribe that selected this site did so for its defensible position atop a high desert promentory. Site selection was critical for the Sinagua, and perfectly executed here. This culture combined hunting and gathering with agriculture, but the latter was challenging in this arrid wilderness terrain. The exact site location, which requires considerable effort to reach, is intentionally omitted. Its estimated age dates to 1300 AD - 1400 AD.
