Casale Marittimo stands on what was once, in the 7th century BC, an important Etruscan settlement, an outpost of Volterra towards the sea. Casale Marittimo develops between narrow and steep streets with concentric rings that touch the most representative civil and religious buildings. A path in the medieval village leads to the Clock Tower and the Camarlingo House (formerly the Civic Tower and part of the city walls), the Pieve di Sant'Andrea (rebuilt in the 19th century on the ruins of the ancient parish destroyed by a violent earthquake) and the Palazzo della Canonica, also rebuilt with materials from a Roman villa.
