The Capitoline Hill, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in Italian. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo. An intense blu sky above the majestic statues of the dioscuri Castor and Pollux in Piazza del Campidoglio (Roman Capitol square) in the historic heart of the Eternal City. In the background on the right, the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli and a glimpse of the Altare della Patria National Monument. According to one of the mythological versions, Castor and Pollux were the sons of Leda: Castor procreated with Tindaro, king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the guise of a swan. Always depicted together, the two brothers were inseparable in all their deeds, Castor tamer of horses and Pollux invincible fighter. The two figures are represented in Greek, Roman and Etruscan mythology. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle and high definition image.
