It was built in 1825-1849 by design of architect Hans Linstow. The equestrian statue of Karl XIV Johan by the Norwegian sculptor Brynjulf Bergslien was unveiled on September 7, 1875. Guard mounting, or changing the guard, is a formal ceremony in which sentries providing ceremonial guard duties at important institutions are relieved by a new batch of sentries.
