Castle Rising, Norfolk, England - September 26, 2015: Castle Rising castle keep and bailey on a bright sunny day in early autumn. The castle is one of the best known in England: it dates from the 12th century and is surrounded by huge earthworks. It was owned by Queen Isabella (The She-Wolf of France) and was where she remained under house arrest for her alleged part in the death of her husband, Edward II in 1327: Isabella died at Castle Rising in 1358. At the time she lived there, Castle Rising was extremely luxurious.
The entrance to the Martello Tower at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, UK. One of a chain of defensive towers built in the early 19C to counter the threat of invasion by Napoleon.
The castle is situated on the Laich of Moray, a fertile plain that was once the swampy foreshore of Spynie Loch. This was originally a more defensive position than it appears today, long after the loch was drained. \n\nThe motte is a huge man-made mound, with steep sides and a wide ditch separating it from the bailey. The whole site is enclosed by a water-filled ditch, which is more a mark of its boundary than it is a serious defensive measure. \nDuffus Castle was built by a Flemish man named Freskin, who came to Scotland in the first half of the 1100s. After an uprising by the ‘men of Moray’ against David I in 1130, the king sent Freskin north as a representative of royal authority.

Tonbridge Castle in Kent, England. After William the Conqueror took England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, his kinsman Richard Fitz Gilbert was tasked with guarding the crossing of the River Medway. He built a simple Motte-and-bailey castle. The castle was later besieged in 1088 when Fitz Gilber's descendants rebelled against William's son, King William II. The king had the castle and Tonbridge burnt to the ground in revenge. By 1100, a new wooden castle was replaced with a stone shell keep and in 1295 a stone wall encircled the town. The castle was used to safekeep the great seal of England for a while when King Edward I visited France. In 1793, the mansion was built, and both buildings are now Grade I listed.
