An orange and black striped caterpillar on a plant with yellow flowers and a green background
Single Cinnabar Moth eating from ragwort.
A Cinnabar Caterpillar feeding on Ragwort which is its only food source. These caterpillars will eat the leaves, growing flowers or the seeds and seem to thrive on either part.\nRagwort (Jacobean vulgaris) is found by the roadside and other uncultivated sites. It is poisonous to horses. Well focussed with a natural blurred to black background. The caterpillar is regarded as being a biological control for Ragwort.
Wingspan 44-50 mm.\n\nAlthough there are a number of records of this species dating back to the 19th century, the adults are very difficult to distinguish from the Mullein (Cucullia verbasci), except by genitalia determination, and many of these records are now known to be erroneous.\n\nThere are at least two more modern confirmed records, both from Swanage in Dorset, in 1949 and 1994.\n\nIt occurs from Europe to Asia and feeds mainly on figwort (Scrophularia spp.)

Caterpillar of brown-hooded owlet -- a moth -- in natural light. Feeding on a white wood aster, a wildflower. This colorful caterpillar is about two inches long.
This Cinnabar Caterpillar is feeding on Ragwort, its host specific food plant. Ragwort (Jacobean vulgaris) is found by the roadside and other uncultivated sites. It is poisonous to horses and used to be eradicated from any feeding grounds. Well focussed on Ragwort leaves with natural backgrounds.
The caterpillars of the cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae) are striped black and orange-yellow, a warning colour that is explained as follows: the caterpillars absorb bitter tasting alkaloids from food plants such as ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) that make such plants distasteful to most animals. The caterpillars become distasteful to birds as a result. The bright, contrasting colours are a striking reminder to birds not to eat them. The name of this moth comes from the colour of cinnabar or cinnabarite, a bright red common ore of mercury (mercury sulphide). The adult moth is black and red. This is a close-up of a cinnabar moth caterpillars on a stem of common ragwort. Nearby leaves have been stripped down to the central rib. Photos and videos of cinnabar moth caterpillars: .
