Douaumont, France - May 17, 2014: The graves of French soldiers lie outside the Douaumont Ossuary, located on the Verdun battlefield in France. With 16,142 graves, it is the largest single French military cemetery of the First World War. It was inaugurated in 1923 by Verdun veteran Andre Maginot, who would later design the Maginot Line.

Verdun, France is the site of the Douaumont Ossuary, where one of the worst battles in history took place during World War I.  Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were killed here.  Tombstones, grave markers and roses are shown throughout the site.  Its a famous place where the French pay their respects, in particular on Armistice Day.  The treaty was signed nearby.
