Bumpass Hell is a hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park, located in Northern California. Steam is released from the Lassen hydrothermal system, where the temperature of the steam gets as high as 322°F (161°C). Bumpass Hell was named after Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, a settler who burned a leg after falling into a boiling pool. His leg was eventually amputated.

A bubbling mudpot at Artists Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The geothermal activity creates boiling gray-white mud with rising bubbles and mineral deposits along the rim. This unique geothermal phenomenon combines science, geology, and abstract beauty, making it ideal for travel, environmental, and design use.
Churning Caldron, located in Yellowstone National Park's Mud Volcano area, is a turbulent hot spring known for its intense boiling and churning waters. The acidity and high temperatures of the water, reaching up to 170°F (77°C), create a muddy, frothy appearance. The area around Churning Caldron is rich in sulfur, giving it a distinctive rotten egg smell. This geothermal feature was significantly altered following the 1978 earthquake, which increased its activity and led to the formation of new hot springs and fumaroles in the vicinity.

Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming USA: the mud pots at the Fountain Paint Pot area in Yellowstone National Park’s Lower Geyser Basin are acidic geothermal features formed where limited water supply and intense heat interact with volcanic gases and minerals. Hydrogen sulfide gas from underground vents is converted by microorganisms into sulfuric acid, which dissolves surrounding rock into fine clay, creating a viscous, bubbling mud. The texture and activity of the mud pots vary seasonally, becoming more fluid during spring runoff and thicker in late summer. Their distinctive colors—ranging from pink and red to gray and brown—are produced by varying iron oxide and mineral content in the clay.

California’s Lassen Peak, having last erupted in 1914, is one of the more recent eruptions in the country. Today it is dormant but there is still much geothermal activity in the area. Sulphur vents, mud pots and boiling springs prove that the earth is not asleep. This view of Lassen Peak was photographed from Summit Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, USA.
