Cornus florida, commonly known as flowering dogwood, is a small deciduous tree that blooms in spring (April). The dogwood flowers are tiny, yellowish green and are compacted into button-like clusters. Each cluster of flowers is surrounded by four showy white or red petal-like bracts which open flat, giving the appearance of a single, large petaled flower. Bright red fruits appear in autumn which are inedible to humans but are loved by birds.

May 2022: Flowering white Dogwood
Chionanthus retusus, usually known as Chinese Fringe Tree, is a deciduous tree which is spectacular in full bloom. In late spring or early summer, it is literally covered with delicate clouds of slightly fragrant, pure white flowers with fringe-like petals. As the blooms fade, the petals drop like snow on the ground.
