( Nevertina lewisii) The Lewis Moon Snail is an intertidal species. There are 3 species of moon snails in the Pacific Northwest, the Lewis, Artic and Pale Moon Snail. They can be identified by the opening of the umbilicus. The shell grows around the columella creating a hollow tube through the shell called an umbilicus. The muscular foot of the snail helps it glide along the seafloor and plow through the sediment. The foot can fill with water which expands the foot to the size of the shell.
