Mount Rushmore located in South Dakota is a treasure of America and well know the world over with visitors daily from not just the United States but many international travelers. This monument represents Democracy and America and on this June day with many visitors it was a wonderful opportunity to visit this monument near Rapid City South Dakota.

You need a luck - or careful planning - to catch a rarely seen glimpse of the Mount Rushmore through a tunnel. Mt Rushmore National Monument sculpture in South Dakota viewed across the Doane Robinson Tunnel on route 16A (Iron Mountain Road) , which - by the way - is a historical landmark,
Merrick Butte stands alone (centre), like a fortress, reaching 6,224 feet in elevation. West Mitten and East Mitten buttes can be seen in the distance. The massive, reddish-coloured cliffs in the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley have been carved from the next overlying formation, the DeChelly Sandstone. This impressive formation is composed of fine-grained, quartzose sandstone that derives its reddish color from orange-red coatings on the individual grains. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (30,000 acres) was established in 1958 and is located on the border of Arizona and Utah within the 16 million-acre Navajo Reservation. Backcountry and off-road travel is prohibited unless you are with a licensed Navajo Guide - highly recommended. May 2016.
