A unique study of empty, abandoned boats on an equally empty beach at the English Channel resort of Beer in South Devon, near Exeter, part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The images were all taken on early summer's sunny day when the beach would normally be teeming with people but there is no-one to be seen. The boats all vary in size, shape and purpose, many are covered in tarpaulins but all are neatly stranded on the beach in rows as if waiting for passengers. The emptiness of the boats coupled with the lack of any people lends a surreal atmosphere to the images almost like the Marie Celeste. The sunny, bright day adds to the colourful imagery and invites the viewer to explore the beach. This 8th and final image in the series is of a very smart and well-maintained single rowing or fishing boat with a high level of gloss navy blue paint on the hull and a highly polished and varnished, natural wood interior. The rows of empty red-striped deckchairs in the distance and the reflection of the pebbles on the beach in the glossy hull paint of the boat indicate recent abandonment, almost as if the crowds were running away from radiation or some other invisible force.
