The Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) Shrub is readily recognised by the heart-shaped leaves often full of holes due to chewing damage by a species of Caterpillar of the Kawakawa Looper Moth (Cleora scriptaria). Kawakawa is a versatile herb and one of the most important in Māori medicine Rongoa. It has been used traditionally to treat cuts, wounds, stomach and rheumatic pain, skin disorders, toothache. Leaves with holes eaten by insects are especially suitable because they have the most concentrated medicinal properties.

Deciduous tree to 25m, with smooth silvery-gray bark striped with brown; trunk fluted. Leaves oval, pointed, somewhat pleated, sharply toothed, hairy on veins beneath. Catkins greenish to 5cm, with the leaves. Fruit in pendant clusters, surrounded by 3-lobed bracts; nuts small.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nHabitat: Woods, hedgerows and scrub, occasionally pollarded, mostly in low altitudes.\nDistribution: S. Britain and Europe, north to S Sweden.\n\nIn the Netherlands, this species is also planted in Parks and Gardens.

Rhaphiolepis indica, commonly known as India hawthorn, is a dense, broad-leaved evergreen shrub that typically grows to 4-6’ tall and as wide. Native to southern China, it grows in other Asian countries, including Japan, and Australia. It features serrate, oblong, dak-green leaves. Fragrant, white to light pink flowers bloom in spring in clusters. Flowers are followed by small dark blue berries.
