Most species of Eucalyptus are native to Australia, and every state and territory has representative species. About three-quarters of Australian forests are eucalypt forests. Many eucalypt species have adapted to wildfire, are able to resprout after fire, or have seeds that survive fire.

More than 50 species of eucalyptus are used to obtain strong-smelling essential oils by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. The chemical composition and physiological effect of the essential oils depend on the eucalyptus species. The various species of eucalyptus are not suitable for children under six years of age or for most animals due to their ingredients. In large quantities, they are also toxic to adult humans. Eucalyptus oil is used in bee care as an active ingredient against mite infestation.

White flowers of the introduced Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus), a commercial forestry species used for lumbar, growing in central Chile. Worldwide this is the most exploited Eucalytus in the forestry industry, with rapid growth yielding large trees within just a few years. In Chile the winter-flowering and nectar-rich flowers provide an unexpected food bounty for any wintering hummingbirds, which can always be found among its dense foliage.
