The roofs of several of the Ajanta Caves have highly ornate frescoes and murals which have many abstract patterns interspersed with flowers and birds. The paintings in the Ajanta caves predominantly narrate the Jataka tales. These are Buddhist legends describing the previous births of the Buddha. These paintings are now 200 years old and stand  testament to the highly evolved sense of art and creativity of ancient India.

This detailed mural painting is on an interior wall of the ancient Thai Buddhist temple of Wat Phra Sing, which is open daily to the public. The scene is interesting as it depicts ancient styles and costumes from hundreds of years the Thai ago that would have been the common look every day at that time.

Qinglong Temple was built in the Tang dynasty and restored many times in Yuan, Ming, and Qing. The mural depicted Sakyamuni Buddha preaching(it is the Sutra Illustration Paintings), which was painted in the Yuan dynasty.

Ancient Buddhist temple mural depicting a Thai daily life scene at Wat Phumin, a famous temple in Nan province, Thailand. The temple is open to the public and has beautiful murals on the walls.
Old paintings on wall in Cave 6, one of the richest of the Yungang sites.  It was constructed between 465 and 494 C.E. by Emperor Xiao Wen. The entire interior of the cave is carved and painted. The walls of the upper stories are host to carvings of standing Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and monks among other celestial figures. Yungang Grottoes, are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao.
A religious weathered and very old mural in the famous Bhutanese Temple, Kyichu Lhakhang, in the Paro valley,  representing a mermaid. For a long time this mural has been  hidden behind a giant prayer wheel. This painting is in the public domain. Bhutanese art is anonymous, religious and as a result it has no aesthetic function by itself. A Bhutanese does not view a painting or a statue as a work of art but as a religious work.  Paintings are not signed, paintings have no copyright.  This is all well explained in Françoise Pommaret’s “Bhutan, Himalayan Mountain Kingdom” edited by Odyssey Books &  guides.
