The Wat Phan On is one of the smaller temples in the old walled city of Chiang Mai. It was built in 1501 during the reign of the Lanna King Mueang Kaeo. It houses one of the most beautiful chedis in Chiang Mai. The chedi was built in 2007 and named the Sareerikkatartsirirak pagoda. The stately chedi at this prosperous wát is visited by scores of locals after dark.

Massive earthquakes in 1838 and 1956 caused the gaping crack visible in the picture.The Mingun Pahtotawgyi is a massive unfinished stupa in Mingun built by King Bodawpaya who wanted to show his people his immense power by building a monumental pagoda measuring 500ft in height. Work on the pagoda went on for 10 years but had to be stopped finally, when the economy of the country reached the verge of collapse and the King could not spend anymore on labour and materials. The unfinished pagoda today is 330ft high. King Bodawpaya also had a gigantic bell, weighing 90 tons, known as the Mingun bell, cast to go with the massive pagoda. Today it is the world's largest ringing bell.
