Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Norway: the Taubanesentrale building (Cableway Central), often called the Spider, is a historic structure that served as the central station for the aerial ropeway system used to transport coal from nearby mines to the harbor. Built in the 1950s, the building was part of the coal mining infrastructure operated by Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani. The system consisted of a network of cableways supported by wooden towers, facilitating efficient coal movement across the rugged Arctic terrain. Though no longer in operation, the Taubanesentrale remains a prominent landmark and a symbol of Longyearbyen’s industrial past, preserved as part of the town’s cultural heritage.
