Torii gates in Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto, Japan
Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built in 1603 to serve as the Kyoto residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu (first shogun of the Edo Period).  Twenty three years later, his grandson completed the castle's palace buildings and further expanded it by adding a five story castle keep.  In 1994, the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  The photograph that you see here was captured during September of 2007.

Torii Gate, Fushimi-Inari Shrine, Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan. Fushimi Inari Taisha is the most important of the shrines dedicated to Inari, Shinto god of rice. Foxes are thought to be Inari's messengers, so many fox statues are in the grounds. Torii gates, known as Senbon Torii were donated starting from the Edo period (1603–1868) by those hoping to have a wish come true or in gratitude for a wish fulfilled, with successive gates being added up to the present day numbering around 800.
